There’s nothing like re-watching the legendary Studio Ghibli film Castle in the Sky Laputa and reenacting your favorite scene. One anime we love is #TawawaonMonday, aka #GetsuyoubinoTawawa, a cute short anime designed to make us feel better about Mondays through the magical power of #oppai. And now, her busty younger sister is in the picture, too. Every Monday he goes out of his way to ride the same train as her, to recharge his batteries and protect her from chikan (train gropers), for which he receives the buttons that have been popped off Ai-chan’s blouse because of her explosively large breasts that week. It’s a short anime with a specific mission: to make us feel better about Mondays through the power of oppai, and it’s super effective! While there’s a bit of a “politeness barrier” with senpai and kohai relationships, douki relationships are emotionally the closest. As I wrote in my post about five linguistic ideas that define Japan, there are three kinds of relationships in an organization: senpai and kohai, senior or junior member, and douki (同期, “same period”), someone who joined the organization at the same time as you. Let’s talk about the concept of douki. Japan is said to be a “vertical” society in which everyone knows their place in relation to everyone else, and uses polite or informal language with others in a way that would be unthinkable in American English. This threat works a little too well, with the poor man becoming terrified of touching her, resulting in her frustration the next morning that he wouldn’t try anything sexual with her. When a “mistake” forces Douki-chan and her male colleague to stay together in the same hotel room while on a business trip together, she makes sure to let him know that she’ll kill him “socially” if he tries anything romantic with her.
Because Douki-chan is shy and cute and pure, the audience finds itself immediately rooting for her over the new romantic rivals who will be entering the fray soon.
